the ‘industry

tough to get into

competitive

cut-throat

The film industry is failing to truly nurture UK talent, especially people in rural areas and from working class backgrounds.

Studies show a HUGE amount of barriers in place for working class people wanting to work within the film and TV industry.

The general mood from filmmakers currently is the industry as a whole is not serving the workers, long days and tight targets dominate - leaving only those who either have money to get by or can withstand almighty sacrifice.

The UK film industry is failing - we need a real change!

A REAL ALTERNATIVE

We want to create a space where filmmakers can develop high-end film skills in an environment and pace that fits them.

We want ALT Film Frome to be a place film lovers can come together, collaborate, be encouraged to make creative risks, use high-end equipment, build pro skills and get help finishing projects.

A true alternative to the way the industry currently nurtures talent.

Some CURRENT BARRIERS

CITY CENTRIC

ACCESS TO KIT

POST-16 EDUCATION

IT'S WHO YOU KNOW

Living in a rural area is considered a set back for creatives in the film industry - if it’s not London, or another major UK city, then for some reason it’s not worth investing. Even those who live rurally often lie and state London as their base, so known is this barrier.

Having limited funds means no access-to-kit, through owning or rental. Most relying on education to be their first (and likely only) time kit is given freely. If you don’t take a subject with access to a digital camera it becomes difficult to skill-up.

Too many courses try to replicate the industry, with large crews and expensive running costs, rather than teach a grass-roots indie filmmaking approach and so fall short trying to achieve something unattainable and mirroring bad practice of tough working conditions.

The industry is difficult to get into and so it comes at no surprise that already knowing someone within the industry gives you a huge advantage. Networking is still a large part of getting out there and it’s not always easy to start making those connections without guidance of where to look and confidence.

Where to start ?

Community kit room

Drop-in assistance

open resourses

Realistic film courses

ALT Film Frome would be both a physical space and online resource, offering film courses and affordable workshops to the community. We would also have a professional equipment kit-hire, at an affordable rate, with a drop-in help desk ready to serve any filmmaking enquires that come through the door.

How can you help?

we need a home

First of all - ALT Film Frome needs a home - at the start this could be cupboard space for kit, somewhere secure but accessible so we can start to reach and help filmmakers straightaway in telling their stories.

Eventually we want a workshop space, cinema room, edit stations, kit store and cafe. A real hub for all film lovers, makers and watchers to meet, plan and screen.

Donations welcome

We always need equipment. So far we have gained around £10,000 worth of kit but more is needed! Do you have any film equipment collecting dust?
A spare tripod in need of some TLC?
Donate it and help filmmakers bring their stories to life!

Equally we need to be able to keep the lights on once we have them, providing kit, workshops, drop-in assistance, screenings and updating our resources. Any tip donation big or small when renting will go toward bettering access to film for the community. Please get in touch through the contact page if you think you can help!
